Mathematical objects which are discrete can only take specific and separate values as opposed to those objects which are continuous which can take a range of values.
- Shoe size is a discrete variable whereas foot length is a continuous variable.
- Human age is a discrete variable (*) whereas Time lived is a continuous variable.

(*) Some small children will try to treat age as continuous variable - responding "Five and three-quarters etc."
