Inventing Synchronous Patterns

Here is one way to invent a Synchronous Site Swap juggling pattern.

First, decide how long your pattern will be. In this example I will use a pattern length of 3.

Start by creating a table with four columns, and as many rows as you want your pattern to last.

Time
Left
Catch
Left
Throw
Right
Throw
Right
Catch
1
2
3

Remember the following rules for synchronous Site Swap:

Put a throw in one of the cells in a throw column.

Time
Left
Catch
Left
Throw
Right
Throw
Right
Catch
1
4x
2
3

Count forward half that number of places. If you fall off the bottom, come back on the top. That gives you the landing row. Put a start in the appropriate column. If your throw has an "X" then it's in the other hand, otherwise it's in the same hand. In this example it's crossed over.

Time
Left
Catch
Left
Throw
Right
Throw
Right
Catch
1
4x
2
3
*

Now put another throw. Remember that you must use even numbers.

Time
Left
Catch
Left
Throw
Right
Throw
Right
Catch
1
4x
2
2
*
3
*

And another one.

Time
Left
Catch
Left
Throw
Right
Throw
Right
Catch
1
4x
2
2
*
6
*
3
*

And another one.

Time
Left
Catch
Left
Throw
Right
Throw
Right
Catch
1
4x
2
*
2
*
6
*
3
2x
*

Now there are two place left to throw from. Both are in the right hand. There are two landing places. Both are in the left hand. Both remaining throws must be crossing throws.

Time
Left
Catch
Left
Throw
Right
Throw
Right
Catch
1
4x
2

2
*
6
8x
*
3
*
2x
*

Time

Right
Catch
1
*
4x
2
*
2
*
6
8x
*
3
*
2x
2x

Here is the new pattern:
(4x,2) (6,8x) (2x,2x)

Can you do that? I can't!
