[[[>40 Q: Why did the chicken cross the Möbius band? _ A: To get to the other ... oh. ]]] The Möbius band or strip, named after August Ferdinand Möbius, a nineteenth century German mathematician, is a well-known mathematical shape. It is a surface with only one side and one edge. IMG:bius_strip.jpg It is easily made by taking a paper strip and making one half twist before gluing the ends. IMG:mobiusstrip.png Take two Mobius bands and glue the edge of one to the edge of the other - you get a Klein bottle. ---- Enrichment task Predict the result of each of these experiments: * cut a Möbius band completely down the middle of the strip. * cut the result of the last experiment completely down the middle. * carefully cut completely a Möbius band one-third of the distance from the edge. * increase the number of twists and cut down the middle.
