Given two objects, at least one of which is moving, we may consider the time at which they are closest, and the distance between them at that time. Computing the closest point of approach is quite simple, but is easiest expressed with vector calculus. Calculus was, of course, invented by Sir Isaac Newton (simultaneously with Leibniz).
