* Born: 1728 Marton, near Middlesborough.
* Died: 1779 Attacked and killed by natives in Hawaii.
Three expeditions:
* First to observe the Transit of Venus in Tahiti
** Subsequently also discovered New Zealand and Australia's East coast
* Second and third carried K1
** K1 was a copy of H4, the clock that John Harrison created to solve the Longitude Problem.
** Initially sceptical, he came to call it 'my trusty friend the watch'.
Became a Fellow of the Royal Society.
