A measure of the number of independent directions in which one can move around in a given space. There are several different definitions of "dimension", some of which raise the level of abstraction considerably beyond the intuitive description just given.

In particular, one of the definitions allows the concept of "Fractional Dimension", which turns up in the study of fractals.
